Warner Bros./Time Warner Inc.'s Mad Max: Fury Road and Universal/Comcast Corp.'s Jurassic World were buzzy hits in the summer while the year ended with the one-two punch of Warner's Creed and Walt Disney's Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It was the false hope that Hollywood could pull this off on the regular.Ģ015 was a pretty good year for recycled franchises. And Colin Treverrow’s Jurassic Park sequel parlayed a killer hook (“The park is open!”), a media-friendly star (Chris Pratt) and meat-and-potatoes IMAX-friendly entertainment value that resulted in $1.6 billion worldwide. Both films turned out to be much bigger hits than anticipated, and George Miller’s Tom Hardy/Charlize Theron chase epic earned rave reviews and netted a bunch of Oscar nominations (including Best Picture). This is what I was worried about when Jurassic World and Mad Max: Fury Road were released.
But today, even failure can’t kill undead franchises. But at what point are we going to let once-popular franchises limp along well past death while investors and studios pump untold millions into new installments because at one point, decades ago, they were popular? In the proverbial olden days, a franchise ended once the films stopped making money.
I will be first in line for the next Avatar movie. How many times can we play this game? Yes, betting against James Cameron is a fool’s errand. And now, James Cameron is alleging that he wants to produce a new Terminator trilogy.
It made $440m worldwide on a $155m budget, but the sequel was canceled. But the Alan Taylor film suffered withering reviews and made just $89 million in North America. Then, in the summer of 2015, Terminator: Genisys was supposed to start a new trilogy of Terminator movies, ones based around the reworking of the previously established Terminator continuity and with new actors playing the likes of Sarah Connor and Kyle Reese.
